Born on October 13th, 1974 at Margherita (State of Assam) in the North Eastern Region of India, Shri Pabitra Margherita completed his early schooling from his home town. He went on to complete his higher studies in Textile Technology from Assam Textile Institute, Guwahati (Assam). He started his political career in 2014 and has since held numerous public positions, including as Member Secretary (Assam Advisory Committee for Students and Youth Welfare) and Political Secretary to the Chief Minister of Assam.
A Member of the Parliament of India (Rajya Sabha / Upper House) since April 2022, Shri Pabitra Margherita was sworn in as an Indian Union Minister of State on June 9th, 2024. He assumed charge as Indian Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Indian Union Minister of State for Textiles on June 11th 2024.
Shri Pabitra Margherita has immensely contributed to the growth and development of Assamese art and culture as the Chairperson of Jyoti Chitraban Film Studio (Government of Assam) from 2017-2021 and as Chief Editor of Assamese language monthly news magazines "Maya” and "Sa Re Ga Ma” from 1998-2005. He has produced more than 20 short films and documentaries in Assamese language, apart from production of more than 100 Assamese language songs in folk and contemporary genre.
Shri Pabitra Margherita is married to popular Assamese Artist, Dr. Gayatri Mahanta. They have three children.
