Press Release on the Visit of Vice President of India to Romania (18-20 September, 2018)

At the invitation of the President of the Senate of Romania,Mr. CalinPopescu-Tariceanu, the Vice President of the Republic of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu is on a visit to Romania from 18 - 20 September 2018. Vice President Naidu is accompanied by Shri Shiv Pratap Shukla, MOS in the Ministry of Finance, 3 Members of Parliament, Rajya Sabha- Shri Prasanna Acharya, Smt.VijilaSathyananth, Ms.Saroj Pandey and 1 Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha- Shri RaghavLakhanpal, along with other senior government officials. The visit is coinciding with the 70 years of establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Romania and also the Centenary year for Romania.

Vice President Naidu was received by President of Senate Tariceanu and was accorded a very warm welcome. President Tariceanu also hosted a Lunch Banquet in his honour. Vice President Naidu had separate meetings with the President of Romania-Mr. Klaus Iohannis, President of the Chamber of Deputies of Romanian Parliament- Mr. NicolaeLiviuDragnea, and Prime Minister of Romania- Ms. VasilicaVioricaDancila.

The bilateral talks with the Romanian leadership were held in a warm, cordial and positive atmosphere, reflecting the long-standing and friendly bilateral relationship between India and Romania. Our ties are based on shared values of democracy, freedom and rule of law and are supported by our traditional and historic linkages. The leaders recalled the strength imparted to bilateral relationship by the Declaration of Extended Partnership which was signed 5 years ago.The leaders reviewed the existing bilateral ties and discussed possibilities of enhancing relations across the broad spectrum of relationship including political, economic, academic and cultural linkages.

The two sides appreciated the bilateral economic cooperation between the two countries and expressed desire to increase bilateral trade which stands at USD 810 million to higher levels in the coming years. They welcomed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation on Tourism, Memorandum of Understanding betweenPetroleum-Gas University, Ploiesti and PanditDeenDayal Petroleum University, Gandhinagar and three Memorandas of Understanding of Bucharest Chamber of Commerce each with CII, ASSOCHAM and PHDCCI.

Both sides appreciated a long tradition of the Indology and welcomed the growing popularity of Yoga in Romania. Given the increasing interest in Ayurveda in Romania, Vice President of India inaugurated the AYUSH Information Cell and unveiled a Book on Ayurveda.

The leaders expressed commitment for resumption of negotiations for conclusion of an early and balanced India-EU Broad based Trade and Investment Agreement (BTIA), especially in the context of Romania’s upcoming Presidency of EU Council from January 2019.

Both sides affirmed the need for a comprehensive reform of the United Nations, including its Security Council. In this context, President Iohannis and Prime Minister Dancila reaffirmed the Romania´s endorsement of India´s aspirations to become a Permanent member of the UN Security Council. Both sides expressed satisfaction regarding mutual support for each other’s candidatures for international organizations. The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen global non-proliferation efforts. President Iohannis and Prime Minister Dancila congratulated India on its admission to the Missile Technology Control Regime, the Wassenaar Arrangement and the Australia Group. They reiterated Romania´s support for India´s accession to the Nuclear Suppliers Group. Both sides affirmed commitment to fight the scourge of terrorism, its financing and safe havens. In this context, Romanian side expressed its support to developing consensus on draft UN Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism.

Vice President Naidu thanked Romanian leaders for the warm welcome and hospitality extended to him and his delegation.

Vice President Naidu addressed India-Romania Business Forum meeting today, along with President of Senate- Mr. CalinPopescu-Tariceanu, Vice Prime Minister- Dr. Ana Birchall and Minister for Business Environment, Commerce and Entrepreneurship- Mr. Stefan Radu Oprea. The participation of business people from the two countries was coordinated by Bucharest Chambers of Commerce and Indian Chambers of Commerce like CII, PHDCCI, and ASSOCHAM. The business meeting was attended by large number of Indian and Romanian businesspersons representing the sectors of information technology, manufacturing, defence, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, real estate, tourism etc.

Vice President Naidu will address the Prahova Chamber of Commerce in Ploiesti and also address the vibrant Indian diaspora in Romania on 20 September, before conclusion of his productive visit to Romania.
