Opening remarks by EAM Dr. S. Jaishankar at the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technical and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC)

November 08, 2022

Thank You Excellency. I am glad to be in Moscow again.

Let me begin by congratulating you on your appointment as the Co-Chair of this Commission. I shared a good working relationship with your predecessor. I look forward to continue our working together in the same spirit to strengthen our bilateral trade and economic relationship.

Our two countries have a long tradition of close cooperation and friendship which is reflected in our Special and Privileged Strategic partnership.

We have maintained regular contacts and high-level exchanges, including at the highest level.

The cooperation between our two countries continues to make steady progress. I believe, we are on track to achieve a target of 30 billion dollars in terms of the annual trade turnover. And that is partly due to the preparations and discussions which we have had between us in the last few years. Our economic cooperation is moving towards long-term stability, but this needs to be balanced if it is to be sustainable. These issues are at the core of our talks today.

I am confident that we will be successful in realizing the optimum potential of our trade and economic relations. And that we will also be able to address the trade deficit and market access issues that are between us.

I have come today with a delegation comprising of senior representatives of 7 different Ministries for substantive discussions on various issues and to chart the future course of action. I hope you will take that as proof of our seriousness.

I look forward to discussing this and other issues with you in detail today.
